"I joined because I met a really cool Rho Gamma who asked me to do "Formal Recruitment." I didn't know what that meant, but did it anyway. I ended up meeting my family here on campus within Delta Zeta. The difference I saw in DZ was that the women talked to me about real life things and had a deeper side. These weren't just girls to socialize with, these were women that I could trust with my whole being and who would love and accept me for my individuality. "Greek Life sparked my interest freshmen year because I wanted to get involved on campus and I wanted to meet new people. I chose Delta Zeta because I admired what the sorority stood for with her core values of loving kindness, charity, and steadfastness. I think what makes Delta Zeta unique is that we strive to maintain a strong bond of sisterhood over everything else. In other organizations you may make college buddies, but in Delta Zeta you have sisters for a lifetime.

Giving Graciously

"To those whom my life may touch in slight measure, May I give graciously of what is mine," is not only part of our Creed, but part of our college experience and part of who we are as members of Delta Zeta.
Our National Philanthropies are Speech and Hearing, and The Painted Turtle.
Locally we participate in a "Day of Silence" each fall to raise money for Speech and Hearing. Funds are donated to the Conley Speech and Hearing Center, located in Dunn Hall on the University of Maine Campus. In recent years Alpha Upsilon has donated money towards scholarships for Gallaudet University, the world's only university in which all services and programs are designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students, and is home to Delta Zeta's Omicron Sigma Chapter. In the spring of 2008 we sold Mardi Gras beads and raised approximately $125 for the Painted Turtle Camp.
"My favorite philanthropy is the Painted Turtle. We raise money for children who are terminally ill to go to summer camp just like every other kid. Every time I asked someone to donate a dollar here and a dollar there I think of a child that I am helping and it just makes me smile to know that I am really making a difference even if it is in a small way." -- Courtney Chase, Junior, Member since 2007.
Delta Zeta also supports the House Ear Institute and Alpha Upsilon continues to support the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Contributions raised at The Annual Delta Zeta Turtle Tug have gone toward foundations such as Lupus Foundation of America, and The Delta Zeta Foundation. Sisters contribute individually and as a group to other organizations' philanthropies on campus (photo shows sisters participating in Oozeball on Maine Day in 2009), as well as donating to our National Foundation through the 1902 Loyalty Circle. Sisters have participated annually at the Relay for Life. In the spring of 2008 we collectively raised over $1500 for Relay and the American Cancer Society.
Every fall, our chapter participates in Take Pride in Acadia Day. Sisters head to Mount Desert Island and become part of one of the park's most important volunteer events, cleaning over 40 miles of historic carriage roads for winter. Acadia Day will be held on November 1st this year.
In the spring, we team up with a fraternity to host a spring fling, typically held around Easter, for Bangor area children. We spend the morning and early afternoon playing games, face-painting, coloring, providing snacks and sandwiches, as well as hosting an Easter Egg Hunt for the kids. The Easter Bunny tends to make an appearance at this annual event.
Sisters participate individually in other service related activities throughout the year and with other organizations such as: Alternative Spring Break, M-Project, Tutor Program, Rotoract, honor societies, Pre-Vet Club, AmeriCorps, UMaine Woodsmen Home Meet, OSNA, and many more.

New Member Education Program

Delta Zeta Sorority educates new members, who have pledged to the Sorority, about the organization and the responsibilities of membership. "Becoming a Delta Zeta" is a special new member education program on CD which provides information in a website format.
